Lowenstein was a graduate of Horace Mann School in New York City〔(American Students Organize: Founding the National Student Association After World War II ), by Eugene G. Schwartz, 2006, page 285〕 and of the University of North Carolina.〔 As an undergraduate, he was president of the National Student Association and the Dialectic Society.〔 Lowenstein received a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1954.〔
